CHARLTAN's picture

CHARLATAN is a memoir of Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. A towering figure in the world of art, Diaghilev was an Impresario who worked with creative giants... Fokine, Picasso, Cocteau, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Chanel and loved some of them.

Spoken in first person by the man himself, this memoir details that extraordinary moment when the Ballets Russes came to Paris for the first time in 1909 and started a revolution in the arts. Also examined, with pitiless honesty, his intense but ultimately tragic love for the dance genius Nijinsky.

Leo's number one rule is to leave someone before they leave you. Ever since funding out as a child that he'd been adopted, he's being living by this. Now, Leo finds himself sitting on Brioghton beach trying to remember how he got there. As if in a dream, those he holds closest appear to him - the girlfriend he's rejected, his dead adoptive father and the birth mother who gave him up. He has questions. He wants answers. And all he has are pebbles in his hands.

Artistic Director Timothy Hughes directs this poetic journey of self-discovery, with Michael Armstrong, Annabel Cleare, Ian Draper and Jen Rowe.

Tumble down the rabbit hole with us as we modernise Lewis Carroll’s magical world with wit, imagination and style. We follow Alice’s journey as she encounters a wide array of fantastically colourful characters including the mad hatter, the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire cat. This is a magical story about childhood, growing up, imagination and being an outsider.

Don’t look away or you’ll miss all the fun, Wonderland’s magic is second to none!

California Seagull's picture

Alison Carey’s adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull received rave reviews and earned multiple Los Angeles Critics Choice Awards, as Carey brilliantly captures the comedy/pathos of Chekhov's characters in a contemporary setting. Like Chekhov’s original text, Carey’s play questions the nature and purpose of art, and Carey’s characters cannot escape their obsessions—particularly those related to the endless cycles of unrequited love. Chekhov’s perceptions and sense of humor about nineteenth-century Russian life seamlessly transfer to 2008 Southern California.

The Positive Hour's picture

Miranda has problems: her best friend Emma is falling for a man with an interesting fetish; her husband Roger has fallen for his 20 year old Philosophy student; and her latest client Paula has just taken up employment on the streets of Lewisham. This wonderfully dark comedy offers laughter, tears, politics, sex, art... and rubber!

Chamber Shakespeare Cycle - Hamlet Macbeth Othello Lear's picture

CHAMBER SHAKESPEARE CYCLE
I Hamlet
II Macbeth
III Othello
IV Lear

HAMLET shows the tragic mind at its very conception, naive and inherently innocent, struggling to comprehend and fulfill the tragic mission laid upon him by the ghost of his father.

MACBETH becomes everything that Hamlet struggled to fight against.
He is the corruption of himself, defiling everything that approaches him,
everything that sees him, everything that he touches.

OTHELLO has emerged from “slavery” to find “redemption” through Desdemona. But after the ‘true friend’ of Horatio and Banquo comes the ‘false friend’ of Iago to plunge Othello into Chaos.

LEAR shows the protagonist as an old man, who has survived the trials of his three previous incarnations and possesses their knowledge. He is now ready to withdraw from the stage and desires only peace. But he is forced once more to fulfill the final tragic apotheosis.
